What would make sense

Esposito, if the scouting reports hold up, fits the mould of a high-ceiling investment: young enough to develop, Italian football-educated, and available from a club that, unlike Real Madrid, might actually sell.

The £73m figure is the sticking point. That is serious money for a player who has not yet dominated a full Serie A season. Arsenal would be buying the projection as much as the present — which is a gamble Arteta has shown he's willing to take, but one the board will scrutinise.

There is a version of this story where Esposito is genuinely the plan, and a version where he's a name that surfaced in a slow news week. Right now, we can't tell which one it is.
