Brahim to United: noise or something more?

Brahim Díaz — 25-year-old attacking midfielder, technically a Real Madrid player, currently back at the Bernabéu after his AC Milan loan spell. Comfortable across the front three, capable of the unexpected, occasionally infuriating. The kind of player who looks like a signing and then makes you question whether he is.

Current club

Real Madrid. Carlo Ancelotti has him in the building but the long-term picture at the Bernabéu is crowded, expensive and not obviously built around Brahim's best qualities. Whether Madrid actively want to sell is a different question — and nobody has answered it yet.

Linked club

Manchester United. Michael Carrick's rebuild is real, the need for creative quality in behind is real, and the budget conversation under Omar Berrada is ongoing. Whether Brahim Díaz specifically is on any list anywhere inside Carrick House is, at this point, entirely unknown.

What's being claimed

That United will make a move for Brahim this summer — a reunion of sorts, given he came through the City academy before Madrid snapped him up in 2019. The narrative writes itself, which is precisely why you should be suspicious of it.

What would make sense

Actually, some of it does. United need creativity. Brahim needs a project that centres him. His age, his profile and his likely price point are not insane for what Berrada is trying to build. If you squint, it fits. Squinting is not journalism, but it is something.

What still needs to happen

Everything. A concrete approach. A fee discussion. Confirmation that United have even watched him this season in any formal capacity. Carrick being asked the question — which has not happened. Berrada saying literally anything — which has not happened. Revisit in three weeks. If it's still alive then, it might be alive.
