The award nobody can really argue with

The Football Writers' Association doesn't hand out their Footballer of the Year award as a consolation prize, and nobody should read it that way here. Fernandes has been the most consistently decisive midfielder in the Premier League this season — the player United have built around, relied on, and occasionally over-burdened — and the FWA have recognised exactly that.

It is his first FWA honour, and it lands at a moment when his influence on the English game is approaching something statistical as well as qualitative.

Fernandes is reportedly on the verge of setting a new Premier League assist record — the exact figure and the precise moment it falls are still unconfirmed, but the trajectory is clear. According to BBC Sport, the milestone is close. For a player who has spent much of his United career dragging teammates into positions they didn't quite reach, the idea that the record books will eventually reflect what the eye test has always suggested feels entirely right.

He arrived at Old Trafford in January 2020 and has barely drawn breath since. The volume of chances created, the free-kicks bent into corners, the through-balls threaded on instinct — it adds up. It was always going to add up to something historic.

The gap between the man and the moment

Here is the part that stings a little: Fernandes has an FA Cup winner's medal and a League Cup winner's medal from his time at United, but no league title, no Champions League night that ended the right way. The individual cabinet is filling up. The team cabinet has more space than a United captain would want.

That is not entirely on him — and anyone who watched United across the last few seasons knows it. He has, at various points, been asked to be the creative engine, the defensive midfielder, the captain, the senior voice, and the man who makes something from nothing when nothing is what United have built. Fernandes turns 32 in September. The assist record will be his. The FWA award is already his. Whether the next chapter is written at Old Trafford or somewhere else — that part is still blank.
