What's being claimed

Lacroix is Chelsea's fifth signing of the summer under Alonso, and by all accounts the one they were most determined to get. A France international who has already demonstrated he can handle big occasions — Palace's Conference League run included knockout ties against serious European opposition — he arrives at 26 with his best years still ahead of him and a six-year contract to use them.

Six years is a long commitment. Chelsea clearly mean it.

What would make sense

Alonso's system demands centre-backs who can play. Lacroix is comfortable in possession, reads the game early, and has the physical profile to handle Premier League forwards week in, week out. At Palace he was often the calming presence when games got chaotic — the kind of defender who doesn't need the ball explained to him, he just moves it — exactly what a manager building from the back wants anchoring his defensive line.

The existing centre-back picture at Chelsea gets interesting now. Whoever was first choice last season will need to earn that status again. Alonso is not assembling this squad to hand out guarantees.

What still needs to happen

The fee needs confirming — Flagside will update this piece when a verified figure is available. Beyond that, Lacroix needs to settle, bed in, and prove that what worked at Palace translates to a Chelsea side with considerably higher expectations. He's already lifted two trophies in twelve months. The CV is not the problem.
