160 Irish athletes want Israel game boycotted
More than 160 Irish sportspeople have put their names to an open letter calling on the Republic of Ireland senior men's football team to boycott their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Israel, and the FAI now has a decision to make it can't quietly sit on.
According to BBC Sport, the letter has gathered over 160 signatures from figures across Irish sport, a number big enough that this stops being a fringe campaign and becomes something the Football Association of Ireland has to actually address before a ball is kicked.
The fixtures in question are Nations League matches against Israel, part of the Republic of Ireland's scheduled international calendar. The letter's core ask, per BBC Sport's reporting, is straightforward: don't play the games.
Numbers that force a response
A petition is easy to shrug off. A letter signed by more than 160 people working inside Irish sport is not. The FAI hasn't set out its official position on the request, and there's no confirmation yet of whether the senior men's squad intends to play the fixtures as scheduled or push back.
That leaves a gap between a public call with serious numbers behind it and an institution that has said nothing concrete in response. It's the kind of gap that tends to close fast once fixtures get closer on the calendar.
What happens next
Until the FAI or the national team issues a formal response, this sits as pressure rather than resolution. As things stand, the FAI has made no public statement on the letter, and the Nations League fixtures against Israel remain on the Republic of Ireland's calendar as planned.
Will the FAI stick with the Israel fixtures or bow to the boycott pressure?
