Watkins: the Saudi exit door is open

Ollie Watkins looks to be heading for the Saudi Pro League. GiveMeSport reports the Aston Villa striker has agreed personal terms with Al Hilal, while Sky Sports confirms the two clubs are in active talks over a deal. Nothing is signed yet, but personal terms are reportedly agreed and club talks are live, which makes the question of Villa's replacement plan an urgent one.

The state of play

GiveMeSport says personal terms are agreed; Sky Sports frames it as ongoing club-to-club talks. Both agree Al Hilal want Watkins and that negotiations are live. The personal-terms claim rests on GiveMeSport alone and has not been corroborated by a second outlet. No fee has been confirmed by either. The deal is not done, but it has moved well past the interest stage.

What Villa lose

Watkins has been the axis of everything Unai Emery has built at Villa Park. His pressing and his ability to hold the line while bringing others into play are not things you patch over in the final weeks of a window. Villa are back in European competition and need a striker who can operate across three competitions without the squad depth of a City or Arsenal. Losing Watkins now, mid-August, leaves a gap that is genuinely difficult to fill before the window closes.

The England angle

Watkins is not just a Villa problem. He is one of the few England strikers who has consistently performed at the highest level, and a move to the Saudi Pro League at 29 raises real questions about his England future. Thomas Tuchel will have a view on that.

Another one for Riyadh

Al Hilal have made a habit of this. A club that already carries serious Premier League names on its books is now closing in on one of the division's most complete centre-forwards. Villa will need to move fast if they want to replace what walks out the door.
