To find the last time Scotland handed the job to someone from outside the country, you have to go back to Berti Vogts. The German's tenure is not remembered fondly in Scottish football circles, which makes this appointment either brave or quietly revisionist, depending on your point of view. Pocognoli is not Vogts, though. He is 39, he has managed at Monaco, and he arrives with a reputation built on developing players rather than grinding out results with a squad past its peak.

The Scottish FA have been without a permanent head coach since Steve Clarke's departure, and the search eventually settled on Pocognoli after Sky Sports reported him as the frontrunner. His appointment is now official.

Pocognoli's time at Monaco gives Scotland fans something to work with. The Ligue 1 club is not a place that tolerates stagnation, and coaching there requires handling a squad in constant flux, with young talent rotating in and loan moves shifting the picture every window.
