Old Firm in the League Cup quarters: date confirmed
Rangers and Celtic will meet in the Scottish League Cup quarter-finals on Sunday 13 September, with a noon kick-off confirmed, according to BBC Sport. A place in the last four is the prize. The Old Firm in a knockout cup tie, at lunchtime, in September: Scottish football fans have been given their must-circle date of the autumn.
The fixture
The draw has handed Rangers a home quarter-final against Celtic, with the match scheduled to kick off at noon on Sunday 13 September. Cup knockout football between these two clubs needs no extra seasoning, but the timing adds its own edge: a lunchtime start, a single-leg tie, and a semi-final berth for whoever survives it.
The League Cup has a habit of producing Old Firm moments that linger. This one arrives early enough in the season that both clubs will still be finding their rhythm, which tends to make the occasion less predictable rather than more.
The Friday night curiosity
Elsewhere in the quarter-final draw, Stenhousemuir face Hearts in a Friday night fixture. Stenhousemuir competing at this stage of the competition is the kind of detail that makes the League Cup worth caring about beyond the headline ties: a club from the lower reaches of the Scottish Football League, a Friday night under the lights, Hearts as the visitors. It is a long way from the Bernabéu, and that is exactly the point.
