That caveat matters. Agreed in principle is not done. But the clubs are aligned, and at £65m for a 29-year-old Ballon d'Or winner, City are not exactly holding him hostage.

What it means for Barcelona

Hansi Flick has been rebuilding Barcelona around youth and energy, but landing Rodri is a different kind of move entirely. This is not a project signing. This is the best defensive midfielder in the world walking into your dressing room. Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, and now Rodri. On paper, that midfield construction is almost unfair.

Pep Guardiola's problem

The harder conversation is at the Etihad. Pep Guardiola built his City side around Rodri in a way that had no real precedent in modern football. When Rodri was absent for the second half of last season through injury, City's form collapsed with a directness that was almost embarrassing for a squad of that quality. The numbers were stark.
