Arsenal's first Shield as champions: the line-ups

The occasion

This is not a routine curtain-raiser. The Community Shield is often dismissed as a glorified friendly, but Arsenal being on the winners' side of the traditional champions-versus-cup-holders setup changes the texture of it entirely. The last time they lifted the Premier League trophy was 2004. The last time they played this fixture as champions, most of the current squad were in primary school.

For Guardiola and City, the dynamic is different too. They are no longer the standard everyone else is chasing. Arsenal pipped them to the title, and this is the first chance to answer that on a pitch.

The line-ups

According to Foot Mercato, official line-ups have been confirmed ahead of kick-off. Arteta's selection will draw the most scrutiny: how he sets up against City, the side he knows better than almost any other opponent, will offer the first real tactical read of Arsenal's 2026-27 campaign.

City's selection under Guardiola will be watched just as closely. A manager who rarely fields a throwaway XI in any competition, even in August, is unlikely to treat this as a training exercise.

What's at stake

Bragging rights, yes. Early-season momentum, certainly. But there is something less tangible here too: the right to frame the narrative heading into the new season. Arsenal winning would cement the sense that the title was no fluke. City winning would plant the first seed of doubt.

The result, when it comes, will matter more than most Community Shields do.
