Maresca's City debut: a 3-0 hiding from Arsenal

A shadow that just got longer

Stepping into the role Pep Guardiola held for nine years was always going to be the hardest job in English football. Maresca knew that before he signed. What he could not have wanted was to have the scale of that task illustrated quite so starkly, quite so publicly, on the first afternoon anyone got to judge him.

A 3-0 scoreline in a curtain-raiser is not the end of the world. Clubs have lost Community Shields and gone on to win the title. But context matters here: this is a Manchester City side that still carries enormous expectation, facing an Arsenal squad that Mikel Arteta has been sharpening for exactly this kind of occasion. The gap on the day was not close.

Before a ball is kicked in the league

The Community Shield is a pre-season showpiece, and everyone will say so. The problem is that 3-0 is not a scoreline you can file away as a warm-up result. It invites questions: about the defensive shape, about how City press without the ball, about whether Maresca's methods have had enough time to land with a squad that was built around a completely different system.

Arsenal, for their part, looked sharp. Arteta's side have been knocking on the title door for two seasons and they arrived at Wembley looking like a team with something to prove. City, by contrast, looked disorganised without the ball, unable to sustain the press Maresca's system demands and repeatedly exposed in behind by Arsenal's forward runs.

The longer game

Maresca earned his reputation at Leicester, where his possession-based model was convincing enough to get him this job in the first place. The principles are sound. The question is time, and whether City's board and fanbase will grant him the patience a rebuild of this scale actually requires.

City's Premier League campaign opens next weekend. Whatever Maresca wants to say about Sunday, his first league answer will need to come before the month is out.
