The trailer

According to The Guardian's Football Daily newsletter, the Netflix trailer leans hard into Mourinho's self-mythology — the kind of chest-out, I-am-the-special-one energy that made him must-watch television in the first place. Whether the documentary interrogates that image or simply amplifies it, the full release date hasn't been confirmed, and the details available are limited to what's visible in the trailer.

Mourinho has always understood that his persona is the product. The problem is that the product hasn't been backed up by silverware for a while now.

The gap between the myth and the record

His last trophy before the Conference League with Roma in 2022 was the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017. In the years since, there's been Tottenham — where he was sacked before the League Cup final his side had reached — then Roma, then Fenerbahce, then Benfica, where his tenure lasted a matter of months. The Conference League win was real, and Roma fans celebrated it genuinely, but it sits awkwardly next to the Champions League and Premier League medals he built his reputation on.

He is, to be fair, one of only a handful of managers to have won league titles in four different countries. That's not revisionism — it's fact. The question the documentary will presumably sidestep is whether the manager who did all that is still the same one available for hire in 2026.

Why it still matters

Mourinho documentaries — like Mourinho press conferences, Mourinho touchline rows, Mourinho everything — will always draw a crowd. He remains one of the few managers in world football who can generate a news cycle without a club attached to his name. That's either proof of how large his cultural footprint still is, or a sign that football can't quit its most entertaining characters.

He didn't need to give Netflix the self-aggrandising version. He gave it anyway.
