Süle scores in 7-2 Kreisliga loss on amateur debut for Tiefenbach

Süle retired on 7 May 2026, at Borussia Dortmund, aged 30. He had hurt his knee against Hoffenheim and feared a third cruciate ligament tear. The injury turned out to be less serious than he feared, but the scare settled it. He cited his health and time with his children. "I'm very, very clear about my decision," he said at the time. "Despite that, football has given me a huge amount and I had such a great, cool time that there's pain in saying this."

Tiefenbach's season opener, played in roughly 32-degree heat in front of about 500 spectators, was against SG Kirchardt — a neighbour who had just been relegated from the Landesliga, one division above. Tiefenbach were 3-0 down at half-time. Süle, who spent his entire professional career at centre-back, played in central midfield and attack. In the 75th minute, he headed in from a corner to make it 6-2. Kirchardt added a seventh. Final score: 7-2.

Asked whether he enjoyed it, Süle answered in German: „So viel, wie ein 7:2 Spaß macht." The translation is roughly "about as much fun as a 7-2 is" — dry, sarcastic, and not a ringing endorsement of the afternoon.

Coach Jason Walzel was measured. „Niklas ist ja noch nicht so lange da. Er muss auch erst mal wieder reinfinden," he said — Niklas has not been here long and has to find his way back into it. Walzel had only trained with Süle three times before naming him for the opener. He added: „Vielleicht lässt der Trubel auch langsam nach und wir können uns aufs Fußballspielen konzentrieren" — perhaps the fuss will die down and they can concentrate on playing football.

The fuss is understandable. Süle won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020, coming on for Jérôme Boateng in the 25th minute of the final against Paris Saint-Germain — a match Bayern won 1-0, with Süle returning from a cruciate ligament tear to play in it. He is a Germany international and was part of the squad that won the 2017 Confederations Cup. His professional clubs were Hoffenheim, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund.

Now he plays in the Kreisliga Sinsheim, under the Badischer Fußballverband, seven divisions below the Bundesliga. He headed a consolation goal in a heavy defeat on a hot afternoon in front of a few hundred people. His coach wants the circus to calm down so the team can get on with it.

Tiefenbach's next match will tell us whether Walzel gets his wish.
